SRT and WebVTT subtitle formats

Change the subtitle format without changing the words or times. Validate cue structure, inspect conversion warnings, and choose a timed file for the player you use.

Worked example

Measured local conversion, October 4, 2026: four source cues became a 290-byte VTT from 282-byte SRT. An independent block/timestamp check confirmed identical IDs, times and multiline text in source SRT, generated SRT and VTT. This is deterministic conversion, not speech recognition.

Start from timed subtitles

Use the owned SRT sample below or paste a UTF-8 subtitle file into the converter. The local parser supports SRT and VTT with up to 500 cues and timestamps inside five minutes. Translation has a smaller allowance of 100 cues and 12,000 characters per job.

The extension is not enough

A basic SRT timestamp uses a comma before milliseconds: 00:00:01,250. WebVTT uses a dot: 00:00:01.250, and requires a WEBVTT header followed by a blank line. The tool parses cues and writes the chosen format; simply renaming a file does not perform conversion.

Compare timing and text

Convert the sample to VTT, download it, then convert that result back to SRT. Compare cue count, start and end milliseconds and the complete multiline text. Both formats use elapsed time; ordinary SRT/VTT conversion does not require a frame-rate choice.

Read the warnings

The converter retains overlapping cues and flags them for review. WebVTT notes, style blocks, regions and positioning settings are omitted from this plain timed conversion, including VTT-to-VTT normalization. Keep the source if those features matter. Invalid or unordered timing and empty text are rejected instead of silently repaired.

Choose the right next task

TXT exports contain text without timing. Translation changes language while keeping times; transcription derives words from actual speech. To make text permanently visible in a video, use the subtitle renderer and download its burned-in MP4. A format conversion alone does none of those tasks.

Try the original files

  1. Load the converter sample and choose VTT.
  2. Download the VTT file and inspect its WEBVTT header and timestamps.
  3. Reimport it as subtitles, export SRT, and compare text/times with the source.
